Did you know that many young people don’t have much contact with their grandparents? This could be because of distance or other family situations. We have found that bringing generations together to work on the same project is a great way of bridging the generation gap. Both older and younger volunteers find that preconceptions about the other are changed simply by spending time together.
Most importantly, these projects are about having fun, and doing something different. So, if you are interested in reading, music, cooking or technology, why not get involved?
Local primary schools love to have older people from Age Concern Islington to hear children read or to do basic maths with them. Sometimes there is the opportunity to explore personal history as well. We provide you with training and support to enable you to fit in well with the school environment. (See Older People’s Volunteering Project)
You could get involved in a music project with the London Symphony Orchestra and local primary school children. The project runs for 3 weeks in June each year with participants working together to compose and perform a piece of music, inspired by a famous composer, culminating in a live performance at St Luke’s, the home of London Symphony Orchestra.
For anyone with a love of music and a story to share then the Community Opera workshops are looking for you. Several Age Concern Islington volunteers joined 2006’s Songs of Home and had a fantastic experience. In 2007, the theme is Belonging and the series of workshops runs from May to June, culminating in two performances - Saturday 16 June, Highbury Fields & Saturday 14 July, IAMS Community Arts Festival.
Of if you want to develop your kitchen skills, why not join a community cookery project? Older people will have the chance to learn the finer arts of cooking with some of Islington Arts and Media students. This will be an on-going project.
