ABOUT US

Age Concern Islington is a registered charity (number 1045623) and a company limited by guarantee (number 3039668), registered in England at 6-9 Manor Gardens, London, N7 6LA. We were established in 1963 to promote the well-being of local older people. We currently employ around 30 staff, full-time and part-time, benefit from the help of more than 120 volunteers, and assist well over 2,000 older people a year.

Islington is consistently ranked one of the top ten most deprived boroughs in the country, and older people are among those suffering the greatest deprivation, so our work is much-needed. The vast majority of local older people live alone, and most require benefits, although many of them do not claim them. Large numbers struggle with the complexities of the welfare system, housing problems, literacy issues and social isolation, and these are all areas that we can help with. In common with many inner city boroughs, Islington has large immigrant and refugee populations, many of whose older members require extra support to cope with everyday problems in a country where they may never have planned to grow old.

As well as those in particular need, even the more affluent older people in the borough experience times of crisis, such as following a period of hospitalisation or bereavement, when they might need personal support in coping and re-building their lives and social networks. Age Concern Islington works to improve the quality of life of local older people and their carers, through work that both supports and empowers them.
